abstract | 1,256,872. Safety glass. IMPERIAL CHEM ICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 16 Jan., 1969 [20 Feb., 1968], No. 8257/68. Addition to 1,166,443. Heading B5N. [Also in Division C3] Glass laminates comprise at least one layer of glass adhered to a layer of an ethylene copolymer (see Division C3) which comprises at least 35% by weight of units of ethylene, units of one or more hydroxy or epoxy aliphatic or cycloaliphatic mono-esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, in which the (cyclo)- aliphatic radical consists only of C, H and O and contains not more than 6 carbon atoms, and in an amount not exceeding 55%, by weight of the copolymer, units of a third class of monomer which is a vinyl aromatic or vinyl heterocyclic compound having only the one ethylenic double bond, e.g. styrene, vinyl naphthalene, N-vinylcarbazole or N-vinylphthalimide. The hydroxy or epoxy ester may be a hydroxyalkyl, or glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate. Some of the units of the third class of monomer may be replaced by units of other monomers, e.g. (meth)acrylate or vinyl esters. Generally the copolymer is present as an interlayer between sheets of glass or between a sheet of glass and a transparent or translucent, substantially rigid plastics material, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate, rigid polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene or a polycarbonate. Such a laminate can be prepared by sandwiching the copolymer layer between sheets of glass or a sheet of glass and a sheet of plastics material, and heating the assembly to a temperature above the melting point of the copolymer; the copolymer layer may be ridged or roughened to prevent blocking. In one particular embodiment, the assembly is placed in a flexible plastics or rubber bag which is then evacuated, and the bag and its contents are heated, preferably at elevated pressure. The glass laminates are particularly useful as safety glass, e.g. for vehicle windscreens, bandit- or bulletresistant windows or display cases, doors and wall panels, and light fittings. |
