titleOfInvention | High pressure electric discharge lamp |
abstract | 1,256,369. Metal-vapour discharge lamps. GTE SYLVANIA Inc. 23 Dec., 1968 [21 Dec., 1967], No. 61146/68. Heading H1D. A high pressure discnarge lamp has a filling which includes scandium; thorium ; mercury, in a quantity which is completely vaporized at the normal operating temperature; chlorine, bromine, or iodine in an atomic ratio with respect to mercury of from 0À025 to 0À85; and an alkali metal. In the disclosed fillings the scandium is present in a concentration of 2À5 Î 10<SP>-7</SP> to 1À5 Î 10<SP>-5</SP> gm. atoms per cm. of arc length, the thorium in the range 5 x 10<SP>-8</SP> to 1 x 10<SP>-5</SP>, and the ratio of thorium to the sum of the thorium and scandium lies in the range 10 to 90%, but a part of the disclosed range of fillings is the subject of a disclaimer. The mercury may be present in the quantity 2À5 Î 10<SP>-5</SP> to 8 x 10<SP>-5</SP>gm. atoms per cm. of arc length, and the alkali metal may be sodium in a quantity 1À0 x 10<SP>-6</SP> to 1À0 x 10<SP>-4</SP> gm. atoms per cm. of arc length. The lamp may have a quartz arc tube within an outer envelope, may operate at 450‹ to 700‹ C., and is provided with a starting electrode and series resistor. Prior to filling, the arc tube is evacuated and baked out, flushed with argon, filled with argon through which an arc is passed, and again pumped out. Mercury, mercuric iodide, scandium, thorium, and sodium iodide are added to the arc tube, which is then filled to atmospheric pressure with argon which is subsequently leaked out to a pressure of 23 torr before sealing off the tube. |
