titleOfInvention Racemization of optically active transcyclopropane-mono-carboxylic acids and their derivatives
abstract 1,256,203. Racemic - trans - cyclopropanemonocarboxylic acids. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 20 March, 1970 [24 March, 1969], No. 13527/70. Heading C2C. Racemic trans - cyclopropane - monocarboxylic acids are obtained by irradiating the optically active acids or their derivatives with U.V. rays in the presence of a photo-sensitizer. The optically active trans-cyclopropane-monocarboxylic acids are preferably dissolved in a solvent which is transparent to U.V. rays. Such solvents include saturated hydrocarbons, saturated ethers, benzene, alkylated benzenes, alcohols, water and mixtures thereof. Compounds containing an α-oxophenyl group are useful as photo-sensitizers. A small amount of (Œ)- cis - cyclopropane - monocarboxylic acid may be formed in the resulting product, which may be converted to the (Œ)-trans-cyclopropane-monocarboxylic acid by conventional methods. Examples are given for the preparation of racemic trans-chrysanthemumic and transethano-chrysanthemumic acids.
