abstract 1,255,345. 11-Alkyl-steroids. G.D.SEARLE & CO. 15 Aug., 1969, No. 40920/69. Heading C2U. Novel steroids of the formulĀµ (wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are each C 1 _ 7 alkyl and M is an alkali metal cation, one equivalent of an alkaline earth metal cation or an ammonium radical) are prepared by isomerization of the corresponding A<SP>5</SP>- or #<SP>5(10)</SP>-steroid lactones (prepared in turn from the corresponding 3- ketals and the corresponding # <SP>2,5(10)</SP>-3-enol ethers respectively) and, when required, conversion of the lactones of the salts of the hydroxyacids by standard procedures. Starting materials are prepared by reacting steroids of the formula (where R<SP>11</SP> is H, C 1 _ 7 alkyl or C 2 _ 8 alkanoyl) as their Grignard derivatives with C0 2 to give the corresponding propiolic acid derivatives, reducing these to the saturated hydroxy-acids (isolated as their lactones), Birch reducing these to the corresponding 2,5(10)-dienes and hydrolysing these to the required # <SP>5(10)</SP> -starting materials which need not be isolated, more vigorous hydrolysis leading directly to the #4-3-ones of the invention; or by subjecting steroids of the formula to similar conversion to hydroxy-acids via propiolic acids after protection of the 3-keto group as a ketal, followed by removal of the protecting group to give the required #5-3-keto starting materials which are not actually isolated but which are isomerized directly to novel products of the invention. If products of these processes are racemates, the starting materials being racemates, they may be resolved by standard procedures.
