titleOfInvention Method of metalating unsaturated polymers
abstract 1,254,220. Metalating unsaturated polymers. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. 6 March, 1969 [14 March, 1968], No. 12034/69. Headings C3G and C3P. A polymer containing olefinic or aromatic unsaturation is reacted with an organolithium compound and a compound of an alkali metal other than lithium in which the metal is joined to an oxygen, sulphur or nitrogen atom. The polymer may be a " live " alkali metal compound catalysed polymerization product or it may have been deactivated. Suitable polymers include polybutadiene, polystyrene, polyisoprene, butadiene-styrene, butadiene-isoprene, isoprene-isobutylene copolymers and ethylenepropylene terpolymer. Alkali metal alkoxides, sulphides, amides or hydroxides may be employed as cometalating agent. The metalated polymers may be after-treated (a) with carbon dioxide to introduce carboxyl groups, which may be reacted successively with glycols and diisocyanates to give polyurethanes, (b) by reaction with ethylene oxide to give polyols, (c) by graft polymerization of monomers, and (d) by reaction with polymers containing halogen groups. In examples butadiene is homopolymerized in the presence of n-C 4 H 9 Li and either the " live " polymer or the neutralized " dead " polymer is treated with n-C 4 H 9 Li/t-C 4 H 9 OK and in some cases the polymers deactivated and treated with Si(CH 3 ) 3 Cl, while in others the metalated polymer is reacted with styrene.
