titleOfInvention A process for improving the adhesive properties of artificial leather
abstract 1,253,677. Bonding artificial leather. GLANZSTOFF A.G. 21 Nov., 1968 [23 Jan., 1968], No. 55223/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division Dl] The adhesive properties of artificial leather which comprises a non-woven fibre structure which has been bonded and then impregnated with an elastomeric polymer are improved by applying thereto an aqueous electrolyte solution so that the artificial leather assumes a pH value of from 2 up to 7. The artificial leather may be treated with aqueous solutions of salts having a pH value of 2-7 when measured on a 10% by weight solution, or with a weak, non- volatile, organic acids in 1-10% by weight aqueous solutions. Aqueous solutions of salts of chromium, aluminium, zinc, iron, calcium or ammonium, e.g. zinc chloride, chromium chloride, iron chloride, calcium chloride or ammonium chloride, of sodium chloride and ammonium chloride or of citric acid, may be used. The artificial leather may be of a bonded non-woven fibre structure impregnated with a polyurethane or polyacrylate, and the treatment with the electrolyte solution may be effected on the finished artificial leather or in the final stage of the manufacturing process. The treated artificial leather may be bonded with natural leather or other treated artificial leather using aqueous dispersions of natural rubber, polychloroprene or a polyurethane.
