abstract 1,252,466. Semi-permeable membranes. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 27 Feb., 1969 [29 Feb., 1968], No. 10480/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] A semi-permeable membrane is prepared by- (a) preparing a concentrated dope by intermixing (i) at least 10% by weight of at least one cellulose ester e.g. cellulose acetate, (ii) acetic acid and acetone in a weight ratio of from 20 : 80 to 80 : 20, and (iii) a pore-producing amine salt in an amount of at least 0À01 weight per cent, the salt being a pore-producing hydrohalide, nitrate, sulphate or phosphate salt of an organic amine or quaternary ammonium halide compound, soluble in water at 34‹ F. to the extent of at least 0À005 weight per cent and in the concentrated dope at 77‹ F. to the extent of at least 0À2 weight per cent, (b) casting the concentrated dope in the form of a film, (c) evaporating a portion of the solvent in the concentrated dope from the cast film and (d) immersing the film in water to remove more than half of the pore-producing amine salt from the film. The salt may be chosen from pyridine, triethylamine, triethanolamine, diethanolamine, picoline, lutidine, N,N-dimethylaniline and 2-aminoethanol sulphates, triethanolamine phosphate, tetraethylammonium bromide and iodide and diethyldimethylammonium bromide. The semipermeable membranes may be used to purify water of reverse osmosis.
