abstract | 1,252,282. Polyesteramides and compositions thereof; nitrocellulose compositions. VICTOR WOLF Ltd. 6 June, 1969 [7 June, 1968J, No. 27201/68. Headings C3F and C3R. Polyesteramides comprise the condensation product of (a) one or more polyamines H 2 N(RNH) n H where R is C 2-6 alkylene and n is 1 to 4 and is 1 in at least 50% of the polyamine, (b) a dihydric alcohol where R<SP>1</SP> is C 2 or C 3 alkylene, X is 2-propylidene, m and p are each at least 1 and m+p is not more than 4 produced by addition of 2 to 4 moles of ethylene or propylene oxide to one mole of diphenylol propane, and (c) a polymeric fat acid. A minor proportion of (a) may be replaced by an aromatic or alicyclic amine and of (c) may be replaced by an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and a monocarboxylic acid may also be present. The reactants preferably provide a ratio of hydroxyl: amino equivalents of 5 : 95 to 50 : 50 1 carboxyl equivalent per hydroxyl plus amine equivalent. Modified polymers.-Thioxotropic vehicles may be obtained by condensing 2 to 20 wt. per cent of the polyesteramide with a "polymerizable ester", defined as an unsaturated glyceride oil; partially polymerized glyceride oil; oil modified alkyd; fatty acid-polyhydric alcohol ester; or a resin or varnish ester, at 120‹ to 280‹ C. In examples the "polymerizable esters" used are (34, 35, 38 and 39) soya modified alkyds, (36) linseed oil, and (37) a rosinmodified phenol-formaldehyde resin plus linseed oil. The products are thinned to 40 to 60% solids with white spirits or xylene to give thixotropic products. Printing inks.-Alcoholic solutions of the polyesteramides are useful in printing inks. Examples of flexographic and rotogravure inks comprise the following components: polyesteramide; TiO 2 , toluene sulphonamide-formaldehyde condensate; n-propanol; petroleum solvent; polyethylene and petroleum waxes; silicone oil; nitrocellulose; ethanol; ethyl acetate and toluene. |
