1,251,847. Homopolymers of tris(2-hydroxyalkyl)isocyanurates. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 27 March, 1969 [25 March, 1968; 18 Feb. 1969], No. 7375/71. Divided out of 1,251,846. Heading C3R. Tris(2-hydroxyalkyl)isocyanurate in which each alkyl group contains at least 2 carbon atoms, is polymerized by dissolving the isocyanurate and an acid etherification catalyst in solvent water, e.g. heated to 80‹ C., and adding a further solvent which forms an azeotrope with water. The mixture is heated at up to 250‹ C. whereby the solvent water and water of condensation are removed as azeotropes. The reaction is terminated before more than 0.75 mol. of water of condensation per mole of isocyanurate have been removed. The pH is maintained at <6 throughout the reaction. |
