abstract 1,251,772. Coated products. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 5 March, 1970 [27 March, 1969; 1 Dec., 1969], No. 10658/70. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Coating compositions which can be applied to steel, wood, glass, polypropylene, polystyrene or styrene copolymers, comprises a backbone to which is attached 10-75% by wt. of the polymer of ester groups comprising (a) groups of the formula -COOR<SP>1</SP>OH and (b) groups of the formula where one of R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> is hydrogen and the other is -CH 2 OCOR<SP>3</SP>, in which R<SP>1</SP> is a C 2 -C 10 saturated hydrocarbon radical, R<SP>2</SP> is alkylene, vinylene, aromatic carbocyclic or heterocyclic, and R<SP>3</SP> is C 1 -C 26 alkyl or C 12 -C 18 alkenyl and the molar ratio of (a) to (b) is 1:1:5-2.5. The polymers are prepared by solution copolymerisation of a monomer with a hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate and the reaction product of a hydroxyalkyl acrylic ester with an acid anhydride R<SP>2</SP>(CO) 2 O, and a glycidyl ester of the formula CH 2 (O)CH-CH 2 -OCOR<SP>3</SP>. The monomer(s) used in the Examples are (I) styrene and methyl methacrylate, (2) butyl methacrylate and (4) methyl methacrylate. Coating compositions comprise 10-60% of the resin blend with a solvent in which the resin blend comprises 60-90% of a polymer as described above, 10-40% of a thennosetting resin and 0.2-5% based on the resin blend of an acidic catalyst. The thermosetting resin exemplified is hexamethoxymethyl melamine optionally mixed with a polyester obtained from phthalic anhydride/maleic anhydride/trimethylol propane/ethylene glycol/ glycidyl ester of tertiary carboxylic acid. Xylol, glycol ethyl ether acetate and butanol are used as solvents with titanium dioxide as pigment and p-toluene sulphonic acid as catalyst. The paints are sprayed onto steel treated with zinc phosphate and cured at 65-120‹C.
