abstract 1,250,390. Process for grafting olefin polymers. AVISUN CORP. 5 Dec., 1969 [5 Dec., 1968], No. 59490/69. Heading C3G. An ethylenically unsaturated monomer is grafted on to an olefin polymer using as free radical initiator a diperester of formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are independently selected from branched C 4 to C 10 -alkanoyl radicals. Preferably the monomer is a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound, e.g. a vinyl pyridine, vinyl morpholinone or vinyl lactam, or a mixture thereof with another monomer. In examples, the graft polymerization is carried out in aqueous suspension using a catalyst selected from 2,5 - dimethyl - 2,5 - bis (2 - ethylperhexanoyl)hexane, or a mixture thereof with t-butyl- 2 - ethylperhexanoate, 2,5 - dimethyl - 2,5 - bis- (perisobutyroyl)hexane, 2,5 - dimethyl - 2,5- bis(3,5,5 - trimethylperhexanoyl)hexane or 2,5- dimethyl - 2,5 - bis(perneopentanoyl)hexane. The olefin polymer and graft monomer as are follows: (a) polypropylene, 4-vinylpyridine and styrene, or acrylonitrile; (b) polypropylene, 2- methyl-5-vinyl pyridine and styrene; (c) polypropylene and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and (d) propylene-ethylene terminal block copolymer, 4-vinylpyridine and styrene. Fibres produced from the polypropylene grafted with 4-vinylpyridine and styrene are dyed.
