An overturn-type mill or mixer comprises a drum or casing 1 rotatable by a motor 34 and mounted in a yoke 30, the casing being normally sealed by a spring-urged valve 8. The valve is opened when the casing is moved into engagement with a feed chute 60 by operation of a motor 54 and slider arrangement 39; and is similarly opened when the yoke is rotated to upturn the drum by operation of a motor 44, and moved downwards by the motor 54 into contact with a discharge chute 64. A member 62 or 66 contacts a finger 22, Fig. 2, in the centre of the valve member to open the valve 8. The motor mechanisms are sealed, and the slider is sealed by bellows 58 so that the apparatus may be used in the preparation of dangerous powders, e.g. uranium or plutonium oxides for sintering. A sheer grid may be provided in the discharge chute 64 or extension 6.
