[Also in Division C3] A pharmaceutical composition comprises a double-stranded complex of a heteropolynucleotide consisting of inosinic and guanylic acid units and a homopolynucletide consisting essentially of cytidylic acid units (see Division C3) in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier such as a phosphate-buffered saline solution. The composition may be administered parenterally or topically, and induces the formation of interferon and resistance to viral infection.
