Novel compounds I in which each of R 2 , R 4 and R 5 is an optionally substituted hydrocarbon radical and their O- acyl derivatives are prepared by reduction of novel compounds II or their acyl derivatives, or by splitting off the group X in a compound III wherein X is an optionally substituted methylene group, followed where desired by acylation. Compounds II are prepared by treatment of compounds IV with a glycol splitting oxidizing agent. Intermediates isolated which are prepared by the usual methods are compounds III and IV, 1,2 - O - -isopropylidene - 3 - O - n -propyl - α - D- glucofuranose; 1,2 - O - isopropylidene - 3 - O- n - propyl - 5,6 - di - O - (4 - chlorobenzyl) - a- D-glucofuranose and the corresponding 3-O- methyl derivative; ethyl-3-O-methyl-5,6-di-O, (4 - chlorobenzyl) - D - glucofuranoside; 1,2- O - isopropylidene - 6 - O - phenyl - α - D - glucofuranose; 1,2 - O - isopropylidene - 3,5 - di - O- acetyl - 6 - O - phenyl - α- D - glucofuranose; 1,2 - O - isopropylidene - 3,5 - di - O - benzyl - 6- O - phenyl - α - D - glucofuranose; ethyl - 3,5- di - O - benzyl - 6 - O - phenyl - D - glucofuranoside; 1,2 - O - isopropylidene - 6 - O - (4- chlorophenyl)-α-D-glucofuranose and its 3,5-di- O - acetyl and 3,5 - di - O - benzyl derivatives; ethyl - 3,4 - di - O - benzyl - 6 - (4 - chlorophenyl) - D - glucofuranoside; 1,2 - O - isopropylidene - 6 - O - (4 - methoxyphenyl) - α - D- glucofuranose and its 3,5-di-O-acetyl and 3,5-di- O-benzyl derivatives; ethyl-3,5-di-O-benzyl-6- O - (4 - methoxyphenyl) - D - glucofuranoside; 1,2 - isopropylidene - 3 - O - allyl - 5,6 - di - O - benzyl - α - D - glucofuranose; ethyl 3 - O - allyl - 5,6 - di - O - benzyl - D - glucofuranoside; 1,2 - O - isopropylidene - 3 - O - benzyl - 5,6 - di- O - benzoyl - α - D - glucofuranose; and ethyl- 3 - O - benzyl - 5,6 - di - O - benzoyl - D - glucofuranoside. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise compounds I or II in conjunction with suitable carriers, are administered orally or parenterally and are useful as anti-inflammatory agents.
