titleOfInvention | Treatment of cellulosic materials |
abstract | 1,248,212. Treating cellulosic materials. SUN CHEMICAL CORP. 13 Nov., 1968 [13 Nov., 1967], No. 53952/68. Heading D1P. [Also in Division C3] Cellulosic stock, slubbing, yarn or fabric is impregnated with an acidic aqueous solution containing as reactant a dimethylol dihydroxy cyclic ethylene urea or a partially or completely methylated derivative thereof, an acid-reacting catalyst and 1-7% by weight calculated on a 40% aqueous solution of the reactant of a partially neutralised alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acid, excess solution is removed, the impregnated material is dried, and in the case of stock, stubbing or yarn made up into a fabric, and heated to an elevated temperature to condense the reactor. Resilient and lofty napped or pile fabrics may be treated to develop the pile or nap after drying and prior to heating to condense the reactant. Fabrics may be made up into a garment, e.g. a skirt, and pressed after drying and prior to heating. The alphahydroxy acid may be tartaric, citric, lactic, hydroxyacetic, alpha-hydroxy butyric or iso butyric or alphahydroxy valeric acid and the acid-reacting catalyst may be zinc nitrate or chloride, magnesium chloride, zirconium oxychloride or the hydrochloride of 2-amino- 2-methyl-1-propanol. Drying may be effected at 200‹F and heating at 340‹-390‹F. The treating composition may also contain dimethylol cyclic propylene urea or a triazinone resin, lubricants, softeners, e.g. glycerol monostearate, bodying agents, flame retardants, soil shedding agents, mildew inhibitors, anti-wet-soiling agents and fluorescent brighteners. After addition to the aqueous solution of the reactant the alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acid may be partially neutralised with caustic soda or potash to adjust the solution to a pH of 3.5-7. Materials comprising cotton, viscose rayon or linen alone or in admixture with polyester, nylon, wool or silk may be treated. The materials may have been dyed or printed. |
