titleOfInvention Polymers and process for their production
abstract 1,246,328. Polymers containing heterocyclic groups and aminoalkyl or hydroxyalkyl groups. GAF CORP. 24 Sept., 1968 [3 Oct., 1967], No. 45396/68. Heading C3P. Polymers of N-vinyl heterocyclic monomers, said polymers containing aminoalkyl or hy- ,droxylalkyl groups on the carbon atoms alpha to the nitrogen atom and/or on the carbon atom alpha to the carbonyl group which is adjacent the nitrogen atom, unless the latter is already substituted with a methyl or ethyl group, are obtained by reacting the heterocyclic monomer or its homopolymer with an olefinic alcohol or amine in a solvent in the presence of a peroxide catalyst. The treatment of the monomer may result in simultaneous polymerization and alkylation. A small amount of the alcohol or amine is incorporated as comonomer. The monomers employed are N-vinyl-2-oxazolidone, N-vinyl-3-morpholinone and the 5-methyl- and 5-ethyl derivatives thereof, N-vinyl succinimide, N-vinyl diglycolylimide, N-vinyl glutarimide and monomers of the formula where R and R 1 are hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, and n is 1 to 3 and their thio analogues. In the examples mixtures of vinyl pyrrolidone, N- vinyl piperidone, N-vinyl-#-caprolactam or N- vinyl succinimide with allyl alcohol or amine, 1- amino-3-butene or 5-hexen-1-ol, and of polyvinyl pyrrolidone, piperidone or #-caprolactam with allyl alcohol or amine are heated with dit-butyl peroxide.
