A process for the preparation of an aromatic nitrile containing a free hydroxyl group attached to the nucleus, comprises reacting an aromatic compound containing a free hydroxyl group and an alkyl group attached to the nucleus thereof with a gas mixture containing NH 3 and O 2 at a temperature of between 200‹ and 425‹ C. in the presence of an ammoxidation catalyst, the contact time of the reactants with the catalyst being less than 8 seconds. Using this process p-cyanophenol is prepared in the examples. |
