titleOfInvention Flat-shaped articles of vinyl polymers and process of producing the same
abstract 1,244,086. Laminates. GOPPINGER KALIKOUND KUNSTLEDER - WERKE G.m.b.H. 28 March, 1969, No. 16565/69. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B1-B2 and C3] A process for producing a flat-shaped, air- and-water vapour-permeable and water-absorbing article of microcellular structure, comprises forming a mixture containing a substantially water-insoluble vinyl polymer, a plasticizer therefor and an aqueous solution of a watersoluble film-forming, macromolecular polymer of a vinyl compound, subjecting the mixture to the action of shearing forces, applying the mixture to a sheet of carrier material, removing the water present under conditions such that no bubble formation takes place, gelling the vinyl polymer present by heating, removing the water-soluble polymer by washing with an aqueous liquid and drying the product. The carrier material may be removed from the microcellular structure and the sheets may be provided with a leather-like grain by embossing before washing out the water-soluble polymer and may also be printed, shaded or lacquered after washing. The sheets may be laminated to various kinds of fibrous webs such as woven and knitted fabrics, fleeces and felted webs or to plastics foils which have been rendered air- and water-permeable before or after removal of the water-soluble polymer, for example by dot printing with an adhesive such as a solution of a vinyl chloride homo- or co-polymer. The water-soluble polymer may be polyvinyl alcohol, or a copolymer of vinyl alcohol of a partly saponified polyvinyl ester. Part of the watersoluble polymer may be replaced by watersoluble, film-forming non-vinylic polymer such as a salt or polyacrylic acid, starch or an algenate. The water-soluble polymers may be plasticized by addition of compounds such as polyalcohols, e.g. glycerol. The insoluble polymer may be a homo- or co-polymer of vinyl chloride such as vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers. Numerous suitable plasticizers are specified, such as linear polyurethanes, butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber, butadiene/acrylonitrile/styrene copolymers and polyacrylic acid esters. Pigments and dyeing agents may be present in the water-insoluble polymer, such as carbon black, chrome yellow, molybdate red and metal bronze pigments. Various other additives such as foaming agents and fillers of which many are specified may also be present.
