titleOfInvention Low-pressure sodium vapour discharge lamp
abstract 1,243,000. Discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 3 June, 1970 [28 Feb., 1970], No. 26828/70. Heading H1D. A low-pressure Na vapour discharge lamp with U-shaped discharge tube 1 has electrodes 4, 5 at both ends, the tube wall has bulges a to g and is surrounded by an outer envelope 6 (e.g. of glass) wherein #/T#0À5, # being the overall volume of all bulges, e.g. a to d, whose distance to the nearest electrode is 10 to 35% of half the length of the discharge path (e.g. 96 cms.) and T the overall volume of all the bulges. This construction ensures the retention of more sodium near the electrodes in the bulges. A transparent heat reflecting layer 10 e.g. indium oxide, may extend over part of the length of the lamp between the outer wall of the discharge tube and the inner wall of the outer envelope and is preferably present only in areas whose distance to the nearest electrode is larger than the electrode to nearest bulge distance. In the drawing, bulges a and b are then cooler and Na transfer delayed. Relatively larger bulges near the electrodes are exemplified.
