titleOfInvention Method of preparing alkyl sulfonyl chlorides
abstract 1,242,430. Alkyl and cycloalkyl sulphonyl chlorides. PENNSALT CHEMICALS CORP. 20 Nov., 1968 [7 Dec., 1967], No. 55106/68. Heading C2C. Alkyl, substituted alkyl and cycloalkyl sulphonyl chlorides having from one to twenty carbon atoms are prepared by a continuous process which comprises the following steps: 1. Reacting an organic sulphur compound having the formula RSX where X is a hydrogen atom or a radical of the formula SR<SP>1</SP> and where R and R<SP>1</SP> are alkyl, substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl radicals having from one to twenty carbon atoms, with chlorine in aqueous concentrated hydrochloric acid, said reaction taking place in a reaction zone under conditions causing vigorous evolution of HC1 gas thereby creating turbulence in the reaction mixture; 2. Passing the reaction mixture from the reaction zone to a product separation zone wherein the alkyl, substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl, sulphonyl chloride separates from the aqueous HCl; 3. Recycling the aqueous HCl to the reaction zone; and 4. Withdrawing the alkyl, substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl sulphonyl chloride from the product separation zone.
