The invention comprises 2,3,4,5-, 2,3,4,6- and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobromobenzoic acids, 2,3,4,5-, 2,3,4,6- and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro bromotoluenes, and octafluoro-2,2<SP>1</SP> and 3,3<SP>1</SP>-diphenic acids. The benzoic acid derivatives are prepared by heating the Grignard agent prepared from the corresponding dibromo-tetrafluorobenzene and magnesium turnings with carbon dioxide. The toluene derivatives are prepared by heating the corresponding Grignard reagents with dimethyl sulphide. Octafluoro-2,2<SP>1</SP>-, 3,31- and 4,4<SP>1</SP>- diphenic acids are prepared by heating the corresponding dihydrooctafluorobiphenyl with butyl lithium and treating the product with carbon dioxide. The dihydro-octafluorobiphenyls used as starting materials may be prepared by heating the corresponding tetrafluorobromobenzene with copper bronze in boiling dimethylformamide.
