titleOfInvention Process for the alkylation of ketones
abstract 1,241,103. Alkylating ketones. RHONEPOULENC, S.A. 11 Aug., 1969 [21 July, 1969], No. 40147/69. Heading C2C. Ketones of formula where R is H or an organic monovalent radical of which the free valency is attached to carbon, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are monovalent organic radicals of which the free valency is attached to carbon, and any two may be linked together to form a divalent radical and R 1 and R 2 can also be H, are prepared by reacting a primary alcohol RCH 2 OH with a ketone R 1 R 2 CHCOR 3 in the presence of a basic compound and a catalyst based on a Group VIII noble metal. Liquid or vapour phase operation is specified. Examples prepare: furfurylacetone; 6,10 - dimethylundecanone-2; C 6 H 5 (CH 2 ) 3 COCH 3 ; 2 - benzylcyclohexanone, pentanone - 2; 4 - (p - methoxyphenyl) - butanone - 2; geranyl - acetone; 1 - phenyl - 4- methyl - pentanone - 3; and 2 - furfurylcyclohexanone, using as basic compounds NaOH, KOH, NaOEt, CaO, LiOH, piperidine, Na, and various quaternary ammonium hydroxides, and as catalyst Ruthenium acetylacetonate or its dicarbonyl or diacetonitrile complex, RhCl[P(C 6 H 5 ) 3 ] 3 , RhCl 3 [CH 3 CH 2 CN] 3 , Ru(III) stearate, RuCl 3 , OsOl 3 .3H 2 O, palladium acetylacetonate and IrCl(CO)[P(C 6 H 5 ) 3 ] 2 . Treatment of 4 - (p - methoxy - phenyl)- butanone-2 with HBr yields 4-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-butanone-2.
