abstract 1,239,706. Hard polyurethane foams. HENKEL & CIE G.m.b.H. 24 Feb., 1970 [25 Feb. 1969], No. 8709/70. Headings C3C and C3R. Polyurethanes, preferably expanded polyurethanes, are prepared by reacting a polyol, a polyisocyanate and from 2 to 60% by weight based on the polyol component, of polyglycerine as a hydroxyl group-containing chain extender. The polyglycerine is preferably prepared by the polycondensation of glycerine at 180‹ to 230‹ C. for from 30 to 60 hours in the presence of 0À1 to 5% by weight or an alkali catalyst. This product has a molecular weight of from 200 to 1500, a hydroxyl value of from 700. to 1300 and contains from 3 to 10% of unreacted glycerine. The polyglycerine may be obtained alternatively as a by-product in the technical distillation of crude glycerine, .when it has a viscosity ranging from 400 to 32,000 centipoises at 90‹ C., a hydroxyl value of from 700 to 1000, up to 50% by weight of glycerine and between 0.2 and 6% by weight of salt impurities. Suitable polyol reactants are polyester polyols and polyether polyols, e.g. reaction products of alkylene acids with polyhydric alcohols and/or amines. Polyurethane foams may be obtained using water or haloalkane blowing agents and using prepolymer or " one-shot " techniques. In examples, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenylmethane diisocyanate is reacted with a reaction product of 1 mol. of oleic acid, 1 mol. of maleic anhydride and 3 mol. of diethylene glycol having a hydroxyl value of 300, in admixture with N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>- tetrakis - (2 - hydroxypropyl) - ethylene diamine or a propoxylated. ethylene diamine having a hydroxyl value of 570, other substances present in addition to polyglycerine being water, trichlorofluoromethane, N - methyl-N<SP>1</SP>- dimethylaminoethylpiperazine, diethanolamine, ethoxylated butylphosphoric acid, and a polysiloxane-polyalkyleneglycol ether.
