A process for the continuous production of a mixture of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone comprises the oxidation of cyclohexane in the liquid phase, preferably in a plurality of stages, at elevated pressure and superatmospheric pressure with a gas containing free oxygen in the presence or absence of an oxidation catalyst, direct or indirect cooling of the oxidation mixture, washing of the oxidation mixture with water and separation of the gaseous constituents, wherein the reaction mixture leaving the reaction zone in the liquid or gaseous form after the oxidation mixture has been washed with water is separated into gaseous and liquid constituents and then the gaseous constituents are brought into contact not only with fresh cyclohexane being supplied to the oxidation but also with the washing liquor containing the acid substances formed by the oxidation and obtained by washing.
