[Also in Division C3] Compounds of the formula in which R 1 and R 2 are alkyl, haloalkyl, hydroxyalkyl or aryl radicals; R 3 and R 4 are H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, carboxyl, alkylene or heterocyclic radicals; or R 3 and R 4 together may represent a cycloalkyl or cycloaliphatic ring, R 5 , R 6 , R 7 and R 8 are hydrogen, hydroalkyl, lower alkyl or alkylene radicals and R 9 is hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or aryl are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula with a #-hydroxy alkylamine of the formula and then reacting the product with an appropriate diester of a phosphonic acid in the presence of an available free water content of less than 0À75 mole of water. These compounds may be used as fire-retardant agents in polyurethane polymers.
