Novel α - (1 - substituted - 3 - pyrrolidinyl)- α-phenylacetic acid esters of the general formula wherein R is a C 1-8 alkyl or C 3-9 cycloalkyl group, R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-8 alkyl or phenyl group and R<SP>2</SP> is a C 1-8 alkyl group, and acid addition salts thereof are prepared by hydrolysis of an α-(1-substituted-3-pyrrolidinyl)- a-phenylacetonitrile of the general formula wherein Z is a 1-R-3-pyrrolidinyl group, and treatment of the resulting α-(1-substituted-3- pyrrolidinyl)-α-phenyl-acetic acid of the general formula either with a thionyl halide, followed by an appropriate alkoxide or with a C 1-8 alkanol followed optionally by salification. 4-(#-Chloroethyl) - 3,3 - diphenyl - 1 - R - 2 - pyrrolidinones are obtained as by-products when thionyl chloride is used. Pharmaceutical compositions having analgesic activity comprise, as active ingredient, an α-(1- substituted - 3 - pyrrolidinyl) - α - phenylacetic acid ester of the first general formula above or an acid addition salt, together with a pharmaceutical carrier and may be administered orally or parenterally.
