titleOfInvention | Vapor phase production of perchlorinated aromatic heterocyclic nitrogen compounds |
abstract | 1,235,628. Perchlorinated heteroaromatic compounds. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 21 Feb., 1969, No. 9574/69. Heading C2C. Perchlorinated heteroaromatic compounds, containing at least one six-membered ring containing carbon and nitrogen atoms only, are obtained by reacting partially or fully saturated heterocyclic compounds containing at least one six-membered ring containing carbon and nitrogen atoms, or certain substituted derivatives thereof, with chlorine, in the vapour phase in the presence of gaseous diluents, at 350‹ to 750‹ C. and under turbulent-flow conditions, the chlorine being present in an amount in excess of that required to aromaticize and fully chlorinate the heterocyclic ring and to split off any substituents. Partially chlorinated compounds, e.g. tetrachloropyridine, may be obtained as by-products, and, in a continuous process, these may be recycled to the chlorination reactor. |
