titleOfInvention Substituted methylene steroids and their preparation
abstract 1,235,285. 16,17-Methylene-steroids. ORGANON LABORATORIES Ltd. 5 Sept., 1968 [28 July, 1967], No. 34739/67. Heading C2U. Novel steroids of the partial formula wherein Z is O, H(OH) or H(Oacyl); X 1 is H or a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radical, and X 2 is a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radical when X 1 is not H and an unsaturated hydrocarbon radical when X 1 is H, or X 1 and X 2 together with the methylene carbon atom form a saturated or unsaturated cycloaliphatic radical, are prepared from steroids of the partial formula by known methods such as pyrolysis, photolysis or acid treatment, with subsequent reduction of the 20-ones to 20-ols and acylation of these if required. Preferred starting materials and products have the formulĀµ where the #<SP>1</SP>- and #<SP>6</SP>-double bonds are optional, R 1 is H or CH 3 , R 2 is H, CH 3 or halo, and R 3 is H(OH) or H(Oacyl) when there is a #<SP>5</SP>-double bond and oxo when there is a #<SP>4</SP>-double bond, and in the products a #<SP>5</SP>-3-ol or its acylate may be converted to a #<SP>4</SP>-3-one, and #<SP>1</SP>- and #<SP>6</SP>- double bonds may be introduced by known methods. Pyrazolino starting materials are prepared by the process
