abstract 1,233,444. Regenerating chromic acid solution by electro-dialysis. GREAT LAKES CARBON CORP. Oct. 15, 1968, No.48935/68. Heading C7B. A solution of reduced trivalent chromium compound, e.g. containing chromic sulphate and sulphuric acid with sodium sulphate, is oxidized to the hexavalent state in an electro-dialysis cell having a permeable polytetrahaloethylene diaphragm 16 provided with at least one orifice 15 by introducing it continuously into the catholyte compartment C, e. g. from header 20 via inlet conduit 24, to pass therethrough and through the orifice(s) into the anolyte compartment A, whence the regenerated compound (e.g. chromic acid) may be withdrawn through manifold 18 or overflow means. Salt deposition is thereby prevented in the catholyte compartment. Hydrogen may be withdrawn from the catholyte compartment through manifold 12 via conduit 11. The diaphragm is made preferably of woven or matted PTFE fibres. As shown, a filter press type cell is preferably used, the frames 23 of which are made of A1 coated with poly (C 2 ClF 3 ) and water-cooled. The bipolar electrodes are preferably of Pb, but the anode may be Ni plated and the cathode may be of Fe. The process may be useful in a recycling regenerative step in the oxidation with sodium dichromate of organic compounds, e.g. naphthalene, anthracene, camphene, nitrotoluene, ditolysulphone, unsaturated fatty acids and otoluenesulphonamide to quinones. Alternatively, the reduced chromium compound solution may be a chromite ore H 2 SO 4 extract.
