abstract | 1,233,336. Straightening hair. KINGSHOTT INVESTMENTS (PTY) Ltd. 19 Sept., 1969 [20 Sept., 1968], No. 46310/69. Heading D1P. [Also in Division A4] Hair or other keratinous fibres which are curly or crinkled are straightened by first applying an oily preparation rendering the fibres combable, followed by a composition comprising thioglycolic acid or a salt thereof and ammonia, the fibres being held in a tensioned state by means of a mandrel and clamp for a period of time sufficient to cause a straightening of the fibres. The oily preparation may comprise a mixture of cholesterol, sulphonated castor oil and a sulphated oil. The thioglycolic acid containing composition may further comprise a surfactant (either anionic, cationic or non-ionic), at least one ammonium or alkali metal sulphite or sulphide, an alkanolamine, and ethanol. Tension may be applied to the fibres either before, during or after applying the composition and 'tension may be applied sufficiently long to remove at least 50% of the curls or crinkles. A suitable tensioning device is described. |
