abstract | 1,233,128. Cleaning solutions containing sequestrants. JOH. A. BENCKISER G.m.b.H. 7 Oct., 1969 [23 Nov., 1968], No. 49271/69. Heading C5D. Hard water used in cleansing compositions is softened by the addition of an acid-modified or oxidized starch obtained by treatment below the glutinization temperature, said modified starch being used in sub-stoichiometric amounts in relation to the hardening agents in the water. The modified starch may be used with an aminoalkylene phosphonic acid sequestering agent in proportions of 1 : 1 to 50 : 1 and in concentrations of 10-30 mg. and up to 500 mg. per litre of water. Typical aminoalkylene phosphonic acids are diethylenetriamine penta- (methylene phosphonic acid), ethylenediamine tetra(methylene phosphonic acid) and 1,2-cyclohexanediamine tetra(methylene phosphonic acid). The sequestrants may be added to aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide containing (a) acid alkyl monophosphate, (b) gluconic acid, (c) sodium metasilicate, Na 2 CO 3 , Na 2 SO 4 and Na 3 PO 4 or (d) Na 3 PO 4 , sodium gluconate and sodium tripolyphosphate, for use in the washing of bottles. |
