Methallyl sulphonic acid and salts thereof are prepared by reacting isobutylene with a complex of SO 3 and an amide compound selected from N,N-dialkyl amides of aliphatic carboxylic acids and N-alkyl lactams in a substantially anhydrous reaction medium consisting of an excess of said amide compound at -20‹ to + 60‹ C., employing at least 1 mol. of isobutylene to 1 mol. of SO 3 , neutralizing the solution of the methallyl sulphonic acid thus obtained with an organic or inorganic basic compound to a pH of 6 to 8 and concentrating the neutralized solution by evaporation at reduced pressure. |
