abstract 1,229,107. Removal of nitrogen oxides from gases; nitric acid. MOSKOVSKY GOSUDARSTVENNY UNIVERSITET IMENI M. V. LOMONOSOVA. 13 June, 1969, No. 30128/69. Heading C1A. _ Nitrogen oxides (NO, N 2 0 3 , N 2 0 4 ) are removed from gas streams (e.g. effluents) by reaction with excess ozone to form dinitrogen pentoxide, which may then be absorbed in water thereby forming nitric acid. The nitrogen oxides concentration in the gas stream may (i) be reduced by passing the gas stream (after the water treatment) through granular alkali or an aqueous alkali solution, or (ii) be further reduced by passing the gas stream (after the water treatment) over a transition metal oxide(s) catalyst (e.g. oxides of Co, Ni, Fe or Cu) supported on, e.g. an aluminosilicate, which processes concomitantly decompose excess ozone. For the initial oxidation an ozone-oxygen or ozone-air mixture may be used. Preferably the excess of ozone is not more than 20% of the stoichiometric amount required for reaction with the nitrogen oxides to convert them to N 2 O 5 .
