An igniter for solid propellant rockets comprises a substantially cylindrical, flexible plastics body 1 having an axial bore 2 and axially extending cylindrical cavities 3 symmetrically distributed around the axial bore with the axes of the cavities lying on at least one ring centred on the bore axis, radial passages 4 and 5 connecting the cavities to the axial bore and to the outside of the body, a primary charge 6, and an ignition charge comprising alumino-thermic pellets 10 uniformly loaded in the cavities around the axial bore. The primary charge comprises black or alumino-thermic powder and is associated with a pyrotechnic system 9 and an electric ignition device 8. Assembling means 7 for the primary charge comprises a lattice-work cage having a polyethylene cover. The pellets 10 comprise a mixture of potassium perchlorate, aluminium and aluminium stearate as binder. The plastics body 1 comprises polyurethane having as a filler an alkaline earth metal oxalate.
