abstract 1,228,251. Active charcoal. W. SQUINDO. 27 June, 1968 [27 June, 1967; 8 Dec., 1967], No. 30677/68. Headings C1A and C1C. [Also in Divisions C6 and G6] An active charcoal for use as a filtering mass is obtained by mixing comminuted resinous wood with dilute sulphuric acid comprising 3-6% by weight, with respect to the weight of said wood, of sulphuric acid calculated as H 2 SO 4 , diluted in 15-20 volumes of water with respect to the volume of the acid; and distilling the mixture at 450-700‹ C. in the absence of air. The charcoal may be cooled and then heated out of contact with air for at least 20 minutes at at least 50‹ C. above the maximum distillation temperature. Prior to the further heating, a coke-forming ingredient may be admixed with the charcoal (e.g. pitch, sugar, molasses or mixtures thereof), the heating then being at 500-750‹ C. The weight ratio pitch : charcoal is preferably 0À25-1: 1. Similarly, when sugar or molasses is used in addition, the weight ratio charcoal: sugar or molasses is preferably 1: 1-4. After admixing the coke-forming ingredient, a preliminary heating to 150-200‹ C. to expel volatile ingredients may be carried out, prior to heating to 500-750‹ C. The active charcoal may be used in removing pollutants from water, e.g. chlorine, phenol, mineral oil (up to 10 p.p.m.), dyestuff waste, nitrotoluene, or for treating sewage-polluted water (of which examples are given).
