abstract 1,227,940. Polymerizing butene-1. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 1 May, 1969 [28 May, 1968], No. 22388/69. Heading C3P. Isotactic polybutene-1 is prepared by polymerizing butene-1 in the vapour phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising a transition metal halide and diethyl aluminium chloride, the polymerization being initiated at a temperature not exceeding 26‹ C. A small amount of liquid hydrocarbon, e.g. pentane, hexane or octane may be present as catalyst carrier, and the temperature and pressure may be raised when the product has occupied 10% of the volume of the reactor. Examples describe the polymerization of butane in the presence of titanium trichloride, diethyl aluminium chloride and optionally hydrogen, and the compounding of the product with carbon black, zinc stearate, 2 - ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphite, 1,1,3- tris - (2 - methyl - 4 - hydroxy - 5 - t. - butylphenyl) butane and distearyl thiodipropionate to form a moulding composition, e.g. for pipes.
