Isophorone derivatives are prepared by reacting isophorone with isopropenyl acetate to produce a reaction product comprising 3,5,5- trimethyl - 1,3 - cyclohexadien - 1 - ol acetate, reacting this with a dienophile to produce a 3,5,5 - trimethyl - bicyclo [2,2,2] oct - 5 - en-1-ol acetate adduct and decomposing this adduct with a strong base to produce a 4-substituted isophorone. The first reaction product also comprises 3,3,5-trimethyl-l,5-cyclohexadien-lol acetate and 3-methylidene-5,5-dimethyl- 1 - cyclohexen-1-ol acetate. |
