abstract | 1,225,353. Moulding radiants. MORGANITE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 8 April, 1968 [7 April, 1967], No. 16030/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F4] A radiant element for an incandescent gas fire is formed by vacuum casting a slurry containing a major proportion of refractory ceramic fibres of an average length between 0À01 and 0À5 inch on a perforated former. The slurry may be formed of a mixture of chopped refractory ceramic fibre blanket or wool and a stiffener such as alumina, or the slurry may include a metal hydroxide which is converted to an oxide on firing. The mass when cast has a "pimpled" surface which may be rubbed down when dry to give a radiant surface with protruding fibres. A radiant may be vacuum cast on a wire grid former of 72 B.S. wire mesh and the green shape is dried at 150‹ C. and fired in air for ¢ hr. at between 1000-1200‹ C. The slurry comprises 5 parts by weight of fibre, 2 parts by weight of ball clay, and 0À1 part of boron phosphate of 1À5 parts by weight of borax as a sintering aid mixed with water in a chopper mixer. |
