abstract | 1,224,051. Polyester-polyurethanes. TEIJIN Ltd. 16 Jan., 1968 [16 Jan., 1967], No. 2390/68. Addition to 1,186,431. Heading C3R. [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] Polyester-polyurethanes are prepared by reacting an organic disiocyanate, an ethylene terephthalate polyester or ethylene-2,6-naphthalene polyester and a difunotional chain extending agent so that the portions of polyester constitute 1/6 to 5/6 of the weight of the polyester-polyurethane and the remainder of the polymer contains at least one ethylenically unsaturated bond per 500 of the molecular weight of the polyester-polyurethane. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of a solvent. The ethylenically unsaturated bonds are suitably introduced into the polyurethane using a diol having ethylenic unsaturation in place of whole or part of the difunctional chain extending agent. Suitable such diols are alkene diols, unsaturated polyesters or unsaturated polyethers having a low degree of polymerization, poly(diene) glycols, poly(diene) dicarboxylic acids, bis-epoxypoly(dienes) and polyisoprene dicarboxylic acids. Water dispersibility of the polyester-polyurethane may be improved by incorporating a tertiary amino group into the polymer and neutralizing such a group with an acid. In a typical example, polyethylene terephthalate copolymerized with pentaerythritol is dissolved in nitrobenzene together with a polybutadiene glycol and dibutyl tin dilaurate and to the resultant solution is added diphenylmethane diisocyanate to form a copolymer which is precipitated with methanol. The polyester-polyurethanes are used to coat polyester articles, which coated articles are adhered to rubber (see Divisions B2 and D1). |
