titleOfInvention | Polymers containing silicon |
abstract | 1,222,816. Polymers having silyl-containing thioglycollate end-groups. MIDLAND SILICONES Ltd. 28 Oct., 1968 [16 Oct., 1967], No. 47084/67. Headings C3R, C3S and C3T. An organic silicon-containing polymer is prepared by reaction of a hydroxyl-containing organic polymer with thioglycollic acid or an ester thereof, and reaction of the product with an organic silicon compound containing at least one Si-bound radical CHR = CR<SP>1</SP>(CH 2 ) n -, wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are each H or an alkyl radical and n is 0, 1, 2 or 3. Suitable hydroxylcontaining polymers are polyesters, polyethers, epoxy resins and phenolic resins. The first reaction is conducted above 60‹ C., if desired in the presence of a condensation catalyst, and the second at 50-150‹ C., optionally in the presence of a free radical catalyst. Preferably the unsaturated silicon compound is a silane having at least one hydrolysable group, e.g. a halogen or H atom, a C 1-6 alkoxy or acyloxy or an oximo group; the product polymer may then be crosslinked by exposure to moisture in the presence of a condensation catalyst, optionally after compounding with solvents, fillers, pigments and plasticizers. In examples thioglycollic acid is heated at 130-180‹ C. with a hydroxy adipic acid/diethylene glycol polyester or a glycerol based polyether or a polypropylene glycol; the products are heated at 80-130‹ C. with allyl triethoxysilane or vinyl methyl dimethoxysilane in the presence of benzoyl peroxide; these products are mixed with dibutyltin dilaurate or diacetate or stannous octoate or tetra-isopropyl titanate or dipropyl titanium acetoacetonate chelate, and cured to rubbers by exposure to moist air. Uses: sealing, coating and insulating compositions. |
