Mercaptan organotin compounds of general formulµ (where n = 1, 2 or 3 except in Formula 7 where n = 2 or 3 only; R is an alkyl radical containing 3-20 carbon atoms, an aryl radical or an arylalkyl radical; R<SP>1</SP> is H or R; A is an alkylene or arylene radical; Y is H or an acid residue having 1-20 carbon atoms; R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are alkyls or alkenyls or R<SP>2</SP> may be H; R<SP>4</SP> is an alkylene, and Z is a residue of bicyclic heterocyclic compounds) are prepared by reacting water insoluble alkyl-tin, arylalkyl-tin or aryl-tin halides with a mercaptan compound in an aqueous medium, a water-alcohol medium or a water-acetone medium. The reaction is preferably effected in the presence of dilute aqueous ammonia, alkali metal, or alkaline metal earth hydroxides or carbonates at 50‹ to 60‹ C. Among examples of compounds prepared by the process are dibenzyltin - bis - isooctylthioglycollate, dibenzyltin - bis - laurylmercaptan, di - tribenzyltin ethylenebisdithiocarbamate, dibutyltin - bis - n - butylthioglycollate. |
