titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to a paper sizing process and product
abstract 1,220,718. Sizing composition. NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CORP. 20 Nov., 1968 [7 Dec., 1967], No. 55166/68. Heading C3U. [Also in Division D2] Emulsions containing an N-substituted aziridine compound and starch or starch derivatives are used for sizing paper (see Division D2). In Example I, 7.5 parts of #-diethyl amino ethyl chloride hydrochloride ether of corn starch is cooked in 85 parts of water, cooled, and 7.5 parts of the reaction product of ethyleneimine and distearyl maleate added, and the mixture agitated. The resulting emulsion is then diluted with water. In Example II, the same procedure is followed, but compositions containing other N-substituted aziridines are described. These are the reaction products of: ethyleneimine and di - n - octyl maleate; propyleneimine and an equimolar mixture of distearyl and dipalmityl maleates; butyleneimine and didoeicosyl maleate; ethyleneimine and stearyl #-cyano acrylate; ethyleneimine and di-n - tetradecyl maleate; ethyleneimine and di - n - dodecyl maleate; ethyleneimine and hexadecyl acrylate; and ethyleneimine and stearyl vinyl ketone. Example III uses the same procedure as Example I, but describes the use of unmodified corn starch, either alone, or mixed with #- diethyl amino ethyl chloride hydrochloride ether of corn starch as the starch component.
