titleOfInvention Organopolysiloxane emulsions
abstract 1,220,594. Aqueous diorganopolysiloxane emulsions. MIDLAND SILICONES Ltd. 7 June, 1968 14 June, 1967], No. 27488/67. Heading C3T A composition is prepared by emulsifying in water a diorganopolysiloxane wherein at least 50% of the Si-bound organic radicals are methyl radicals, then mixing the emulsion with a watermiscible aliphatic ketone and/or monohydric alcohol, with or without further water, to give 0À1-1 parts of alcohol or ketone per part by weight of water in the final emulsion. There are preferably 1À95-2À05 organic radicals per Si atom in the polysiloxane; besides the methyl radicals there may be present e.g. ethyl, propyl, hexyl, octadecyl, vinyl, allyl, cyclohexenyl, phenyl, naphthyl and tolyl radicals; up to 10% of the radicals may contain e.g. halogen, amino, sulphate or hydroxyl substituents; the viscosity preferably is in the range 350-70,000 cs. at 25‹ C. The emulsification is preferably carried out in the presence of an emulsifier, e.g. polyoxyethylenated trimethylnonyl alcohol, stearic acid, or oleic acid, or sodium alkylaryl polyether sulphates, or sorbitan monostearate, or polyvinyl alcohol. The solvent may be e.g. methanol, ethanol, isopropanol or acetone, and is preferably used in amount sufficient to approximate the density of the aqueous phase to that of the disperse phase. The product suitably contains 5-35 wt. per cent of polysiloxane. Conventional additives e.g. sodium benzoate as a corrosion inhibitor may be added. In examples trimethylsilyl end-stopped dimethylpolysiloxanes are emulsified i.p.o. a polyoxyethylene oleyl ether in water and water and ethanol or acetone is added; sodium benzoate and optionally a bactericide is also present. Uses.-Fibre lubricants, mould release agents, antifoams.
