titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to a method for bonding thermoplastic synthetic resin materials to glass
abstract 1,220,491. Laminates. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 22 Feb., 1968 [24 Feb., 1967; 24 March, 1967], No. 8768/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division C3] A thermoplastic synthetic material consisting of a polymer derived at least in part (preferably at least 40% by weight) from (a) an aromatic vinyl compound of the formula wherein R 1 is H, methyl or halogen and R 2 is H or methyl, (b) a methyl or ethyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, or (c) acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile is bonded to glass by treating the surface of the glass with an aqueous emulsion of a resin which is a polymer of a glycidyl compound of the formula wherein R is a free radical polymerizable hydrocarbon group having 2-4 C atoms and one ethylenically unsaturated linkage and A is a -COO- or -O- link, the glycidyl compound accounting for 0À01-100% by weight of the resin; and heating the treated glass to between 50-300‹ C. and thereafter bonding the glass to the thermoplastic material, e.g. by meltbonding. The glycidyl component of the resin is suitably glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate, or allyl glycidyl ether and may be copolymerized with, for example, a compound (a), (b) or (c) as described above for the thermoplastic material; the glycidyl resin may optionally be used in conjunction with a separate polymer or copolymer of (a), (b) or (c). The resin may also include units of a diene, e.g. butadiene, isoprene or chloroprene. Bonding between the thermoplastic material and the glass is improved by including a water-soluble carboxylic acid, e.g. acetic, acrylic or methacrylic acid, or oleic or benzoic acid in the resin emulsion. Preferred thermoplastic materials are polystyrene and styrene - acrylonitrile, styrene - methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers; polymethyl methacrylate is also exemplified. The glass may be in the form of a sheet or fibrous or woven fabric.
