titleOfInvention New polymerisation catalysts and uses thereof
abstract 1,220,344. Vinyl ether polymerization catalyst. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 March, 1968 [11 April, 1967; 2 Oct., 1967], Nos. 16475/67 and 44775/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division B1] Vinyl ethers are polymerized or heteropolymerized with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a Grignard complex of formula RXMg(hal) in which R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl or heterocyclic group, (hal) is Cl, Br or I and X represents S, Se, Te or a group introduced by the reaction of a Grignard reagent with an olefin oxide, contained on or in a solid support. X may additionally be C:N, NO, O, CO, SO 2 , CO 2 , CS 2 or NO 2 . In examples: (1) isobutyl vinyl ether in toluene is polymerized in the presence of ceramic beads coated with nbutyloxy magnesium bromide. Precipitation of the polymer formed was effected by use of ammoniacal methanol; (2) methyl vinyl ether is polymerized as in (1). Vinyl ethers may be co-polymerized with styrene, maleic anhydride, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride and acrylate esters.
