titleOfInvention Production of neopentyl glycol
abstract 1,219,162. Neopentyl glycol. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 25 Oct., 1968 [27 Oct., 1967], No. 50822/68. Addition to 1,048,530. Heading C2C. Neopentyl glycol is prepared by reacting hydroxypivaldehyde with hydrogen in the presence of a supported barium-promoted copper chromite catalyst at 175-220‹ C. and 900-10,000 p.s.i.g., said hydroxypivaldehyde being produced by reacting formaldehyde with excess isobutyraldehyde and an alkali metal hydroxide or cyanide as catalyst in a homogeneous reaction medium comprising a C 1-3 watersoluble alcohol at a temperature not higher than 25‹C. and separating the hydroxypivaldehyde from the other constituents of the reaction mixture, e.g. by first stripping off the alcohol and excess isobutyraldehyde and then extracting the hydroxypivaldehyde, e.g. with di-n-butyl ether. The resulting solution may be used directly for the hydrogenation step. A continuous process is described.
