abstract 1,217,662. Animal food. GENERAL FOODS CORP. 8 Jan., 1969 [8 Jan., 1968], No. 1251/69. Heading A2B. A process for manufacturing a stable meat (including fish) containing animal food, particularly suitable as a cat food, which may be aerobically packaged, and which has a moisture content of 35-45 wt. per cent., comprises comminuting meat and forming it into a pasteurised emulsified aqueous slurry, adding at least 5 wt. per cent. of ungelatinised amylaceous material and also, as stabilising solubes, at least 10 wt. per cent. of a sugar, which term embraces water soluble monosaccharides and non reducing polysaccharides and their degradation products, and also salt and acidulants such that the pH is less than 6.0 and the osmolic pressure of the final composition is sufficient to impart bacteriostasis thereto, subjecting the mixture to heat and continued agitation in a confined zone to substantially gelatinise the amylaceous material and to convert the mass into a homogeneous plastic condition, which mass is continuously extruded, the extrudate being cooled to ambient conditions prior to packaging to set the composition. The product may include tallow, lard or poultry fat, undenatured protein extract, and polyhydric alcohols.
