Unsaturated esters of carboxylic acids, e.g. vinyl acetate are prepared by the reaction of an olefinic compound and an aliphatic or aromatic compound (each 2-20 C), with molecular oxygen or air, in the gas phase at elevated temperature with a catalyst comprising palladium acetate, an alkali metal acetate and one or more uranium compounds supported on a carrier. Aliphatic or cycloaliphatic olefines or diolefines are specified and acetic, propionic, butyric, isobutyric, valeric, lauric, palmitic, stearic and benzoic acids may be used. The carrier, e.g. silicic acid, kieselguhr, silica gel, diatomaceous earth aluminium oxide, aluminium silicate, aluminium phosphate, pumice, silicon carbide, asbestos or active carbon may be impregnated with aqueous acetic acid solusolution of palladium acetate, the uranium compound, e.g. uranyl acetate, and alkali metal acetate and dried. Improved yield of ester is obtained by irradiation of the catalyst with ultra-violet and/or visible leight. Examples describe the preparation of vinyl acetate using irradiated and non-irradiated catalyst.
