A glass-ceramic article is made by (i) making a glass melt whose composition, excluding nucleating agents, is in wt. per cent SiO 2 , 12-53; GeO 2 , 0-30; SiO 2 + GeO 2 , 12-53; Al 2 O 3 , 10-58; Ga 2 O 3 , 0-30; Al 2 O 3 + Ga 2 O 3 , 10- 58; CaO, 0-35; SrO, 0-53; BaO, 0-55; total CaO + SrO + BaO, 10-55; Na 2 O, 0- 10; other components, except nucleating agents, 0-10; also present are one or more of the following nucleating agents: iron oxide, 0À2-2; ZnS, 0À2-2; V 2 O 5 , 0À25-2; MoO 3 , 0À1-4; CaF 2 , 0À5-4; WO 3 , 2-10; NiO, 0À1-2; Au, 0À0008-1; Pt, 0À0003-1; Rh, 0À008-1; Pd, 0À0008-1; and Ir, 0À02-1; (ii) shaping an article and cooling below its transformation range; (iii) heating to 850-1700‹ C. to form hexagonal, orthorhombic, or triclinic alkalineearth feldspar crystals in the glass; and (iv) cooling to room temperature. The crystals may constitute 50% wt. of the article and have diameter < 20 Ám. Noble metal nucleating agents may be initially, e.g. IrCl 4 , H 2 PtCl 6 , PdCl 2 , RhCl 3 , or AuCl 3 . Other compatible oxides which may be present are K 2 O, B 2 O 3 , MgO, and TiO 2 .
