abstract | 1,214,748. Adhesive composition for polyester or polyolefins; seaming non-metallic sheet material. VAN LEER (U.K.) Ltd. 25 March, 1969 [29 March, 1968], No. 15320/68. Headings B5K and B5N. Polyester surfaces or polyolefin surfaces which have been subjected to flame or corona discharge treatment are bonded to similar or different surfaces by a liquid adhesive composition comprising at least one elastomeric polyurethane prepolymer and at least one polyol curing agent therefor, the two components being liquid at room temperature or a temperature up to 50‹ C. The films may be oriented and curing of the adhesive may be effected between room temperature and 50‹ C. A suitable prepolymer having a M.W. of 1000-2000 is obtained by the reaction of toluene diisocyanate with poly- (1,4-oxybutylene glycol). Suitable polyol curing agents are 1,4-butanediol, glycerol, triethanolamine and castor oil, these being used in amounts of 75-125% of the stoichiometric amount required to react with the prepolymer. A stoichiometrically equivalent amount of an amine curing agent may replace up to 50% of the polyol. Tin octoate and stannous chloride catalysts in amounts of 0-2% wt. may be incorporated. The liquid adhesive may be applied by spraying, dipping, brushing or roller coating. The method is particularly suited to the manufacture of bags. |
